The Red Tree by Shaun Tan
The Red Tree by Shaun Tan is a picture book depicting a small girl in a range of landscapes that are both daunting and isolating. Tan's landscapes are places of the imagination. They represent our feelings in the modern world. He uses surrealism, allusion and symbolism to create landscapes that visually depict the human condition in the modern world.
Where de Botton reflects on the ways humans and landscapes interact to give insight to the human condition itself. Tan uses landscapes to represent the human condition. At times Tan's landscapes suggest the cause of human isolation and depression, but they are more significant in their ability to express the human condition in a way we can all relate to. |
